Béziers (ベゼルス Bezerusu) is a city of France and the hometown of Lisette Vertorre.
Overview[]
Béziers was a Languedoc stronghold of Catharism, which the Catholic Church condemned as heretical and which Catholic forces exterminated in the Albigensian Crusade.
Béziers was one of the first places to be attacked. The crusaders reached the town July 21, 1209. Béziers' Catholics were given an ultimatum to hand over the heretics or leave before the crusaders besieged the city and to "avoid sharing their fate and perishing with them." However, they refused and resisted with the Cathars. The town was sacked on July 22, 1209 and in the bloody massacre, no one was spared, not even Catholic priests and those who took refuge in the churches.
Trivia[]
- The BGM plays in the prologue of Sin, Damnation and the Atonement Girl, which is the Sack of Béziers event, is named Novit Enim Dominus Qui Sunt Eius (神は神のものを知りたまう Kami wa kami no mono wo shiritamau; lit. "God knows His own."). This is a famous quote from Arnaud Amalric, the commander of the crusade and the one responsible for the massacre at Béziers. He said this when a fellow soldier asked him how to distinguish heretics from faithful believers. His full line was: "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius." (lit. "Kill them all. God will know His own.").
